What is the difference between physical and chemical sun filters?
It is obvious that we need safe, effective sun protection every day, all year round. But many people still do not know whether they should choose a physical or a chemical sunscreen. If you are still wondering what the difference is, here is a helpful overview for you.
Physical sun protection (Mineral Filter)
The sun protection acts like a screen that reflects and diffuses UV rays away from the skin surface. Examples of ingredients: Titanium dioxide and Zinc oxide
Benefit:
- Safer to use because they are not absorbed into the bloodstream. Softer on the skin, and reduces the risk of sensitivity or irritation.
- Provides broad spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays
- Provides instant protection upon application
Disadvantage:
- Cannot be used with higher protection factors
- White appearance
- More difficult to spread
Chemical sun protection
Organic sunscreens absorb UV radiation, deactivate it by turning into heat and then release the heat to the skin. Examples of ingredients: Octocrylene, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane
Benefit:
- Spreads more easily and does not look white
- Offers broad spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays
- Can be used with a higher protection factor
Disadvantage:
- You have to wait about 20 minutes after application before the product activates or provides protection
- More likely to cause irritation
- Can be absorbed into the bloodstream
You cannot hide from the sun, but you can reduce its effects. You only have one skin. Take care.
